Foundation

What comes to your mind when you think of the word, “foundation”?

Is it the building of a new home—with a fresh mix of cement being poured into the newly, deeply dug ground as it sets the pace for a new abode?

If so, envision this newly set foundation in place, where your new home now sits—it is safe, secure, and quite sturdy.   It is solid.  ROCK SOLID.  Literally.

So, then . . . it is that same way for us with our Lord Christ Jesus in our hearts and in our lives. He is poured into our lives as the cement truck was appointed to be at your home at a specific hour on a certain day to pour into your deeply dug ground.  Mixing, pouring; mixing and pouring.

In our lives, we stumble, we fall, and we (hopefully) learn and grow from our mistakes and failures. We sin—constantly.  But the good Lord is always there for us, as a solid foundation for which we are to build our lives upon.

He gives us His word, the Good News, to assist us in our day-to-day travails as we plow through crashing waves, dangerous storms, and self-inflicted pain that comes to us through our own foolish, self-centered and sinful choices for our lives.

His word tells us that He will never leave us, nor forsake us . . . what a great scripture, what a great comfort.  It’s a scripture (Hebrews 13:5-6) so commonly thrown about in our “Christianese”, but do you actually feel it? Do you actually feel His presence with you, through all your troubles? Can you even begin to grasp the concept that He is always there to keep you on sturdy ground?  I remember a troubling time in my life (which one!) wherein I was struggling so hard to stay afloat atop the rumbling waters as I came under brutal constant attack from the enemy, and the Lord gave me these scripture verses seven times in as many days.  Imagine that! The Creator of our universe, and the creator of each and every one of us, longing to reach me through His solid foundation—His Word.  Tears streamed down my cheeks while standing in an aisle at Barnes and Noble.  I was in disbelief. I looked around me—I was the only one in the aisle, but I wanted to run through the store to let everyone know how He had just taken time out of His busy schedule to visit with me, and bring joy to my spirit.  I had just been given this verse for the seventh time in seven days!  No way!  I was in shock, awe, and gleeful surprise! Wow!  Immense levels of JOY rushed through my soul.  I couldn’t wait to tell the world how He’d visited me, or should I say how He was with me, not only at Barnes and Noble, but with me in my storm. It was then and there, at Barnes and Noble, that this scripture came to life for me.  How on earth could I doubt His love for me, and His wanting me to be sure I knew that I’d be safe in His arms, in any storm!  He was with me all along.  Even though I thought I was all alone.  He was there with me.  He was then, and He is still.

He has proven Himself strong and mighty on my behalf, and has always come to my defense—even when I didn’t deserve His loving grace or His tender mercy.  He is the solid foundation upon which I lay my cares of this world.  He is the foundation mixed and poured into my very core, making me stronger and stronger, and more solid throughout.  I will not crumble under life’s circumstances, nor will my foundation crack, for He is MY ROCK.

I lean on Him when raging storms blow winds so strong, a tempest so fierce, that it makes me feel as if I would be blown away and tossled, but I’m not.  He is with me.  I am in His grip.  I am still standing.  Just like a tall building in downtown Chicago—carefully designed and engineered to sustain any wind or storm.  While it may sway in the high winds, it will never crack in half, or topple over.  Nor will I not crack in half, or topple—nooooooo, for He is my Rock!  He is my firm foundation!  With Him I will not be moved!

Storms . . . they hit each and every one of us.

We can rest assured knowing we are safe.

The enemy comes in like a flood

  • That enemy who comes in like a flood, and various others; and because of the rapidity and force of them, and their overflowing and overwhelming nature: now there are paths through which the people of God pass: their way lies through them to eternal glory; and though they are of some continuance, yet have an end, as paths have; and having a good guide, and sufficient strength given them, they wade through them safely; for they do not and shall not “overflow” them, so as to cause their faith utterly to fail, or to separate them from the love of God, or so as to destroy them; for though they come nigh them, and upon them, and may greatly affect and distress them, yet shall not hurt them, but turn to their advantage; for their God is with them, to sympathize with them, to comfort and revive them, to teach and instruct them by their afflictions, and to sanctify them to them, as well as to support and bear them up under them, and to deliver out of them.

The Bible tells us in Isaiah 43:2 . . .and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee

  • It is rendered, ‘In the beginning, when you passed through the Red Sea, my word was your aid. Pharaoh and Egypt, who were mighty like the waters of a river, were not able to prevail against you. And when thou didst go among a people who were formidable like fire, they could not prevail against you, and the kingdoms which were strong like flame could not consume you.’ It is, however, to be understood rather as a promise pertaining to the future; though the language is mainly derived, undoubtedly, from God’s protecting them in their perils in former times.

Psalm 16:8 I shall not be shaken . . . why? Because he is at my right hand.  He is underneath me, my safety net, set before me, he guards my back, He is my sun and shield (Psalm 84:11)

Psalm 62:6  He only is my rock and my salvation: he is my defence; I shall not be moved.

Psalm 16:8 I have set the LORD always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved

2 Timothy 2:19 God’s solid foundation stands firm,

sealed with this inscription:

“The Lord knows those who are his”

Are you sure you are His?

Let Him be the concrete and foundation of your life.

Stand firm!

Thus says the Lord God,
“Behold, I am the one who has laid as a foundation
in Zion, a stone, a tested stone,
a precious cornerstone, of a sure foundation:
“Whoever believes will not be in haste.”
