There Is A Fountain Filled With Blood

As I sat in church one Sunday morning, under the teaching of  Charles Carrin, he shared aloud these touching words, and I will never, ever, ever forget the surge of emotions that ran deeply through my soul.  His eyes welled up with tears (as did mine) while he recited aloud with such deep, sincere conviction, the words to William Cowper’s poem/hymn, “There is a Fountain Filled with Blood”.

He described  with passionate detail of our wonderful Saviour’s selfless act and gift of love, mercy, and grace.  It was for our redemption that He went to die on that cross; and, it was for our crimson-stained sins.  ~ Forgiveness was the name of the game.

I’ve since been fascinated with the life of William Cowper.  He was a godly man who, like so many of us, suffered with deep bouts of depression, but like us, never gave up, nor lost sight of who God was to him, and who God is–the great I AM! ~ AMEN.

There is a fountain filled with blood drawn from Emmanuel’s veins;
And sinners plunged beneath that flood lose all their guilty stains.
Lose all their guilty stains, lose all their guilty stains;
And sinners plunged beneath that flood lose all their guilty stains.

The dying thief rejoiced to see that fountain in his day;
And there have I, though vile as he, washed all my sins away.
Washed all my sins away, washed all my sins away;
And there have I, though vile as he, washed all my sins away.

Dear dying Lamb, Thy precious blood shall never lose its power
Till all the ransomed church of God be saved, to sin no more.
Be saved, to sin no more, be saved, to sin no more;
Till all the ransomed church of God be saved, to sin no more.

E’er since, by faith, I saw the stream Thy flowing wounds supply,
Redeeming love has been my theme, and shall be till I die.
And shall be till I die, and shall be till I die;
Redeeming love has been my theme, and shall be till I die.

Then in a nobler, sweeter song, I’ll sing Thy power to save,
When this poor lisping, stammering tongue lies silent in the grave.
Lies silent in the grave, lies silent in the grave;
When this poor lisping, stammering tongue lies silent in the grave.

Lord, I believe Thou hast prepared, unworthy though I be,
For me a blood bought free reward, a golden harp for me!
’Tis strung and tuned for endless years, and formed by power divine,
To sound in God the Father’s ears no other name but Thine.

~ William Cowper

In that day there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for uncleanness.

  1. Charles Finney, the noted revivalist of the Second Great Awakening, suffered deep bouts of depression through most of his life. Yet, what a glorious ministry he had through the grace of God.

    • D.L. Moody did as well . . .
      This would make an interesting research project, as I know that Charles Spurgeon was also a fellow member of the deep bouts of depression club.

  2. By nature, I’m a positive upbeat person and seldom struggle with depression. Yet, I can remember one time when I was so overwhelmed with depression that I wanted to give up. It happened after reading an inner healing book, recommended by a friend. Thank God, a neighbor saw me and came over and prayed for me.

    • It’s after the victories that the enemy would come in and shake us up . . . to deter us from our comfy place in the Lord.

      Would you mind sharing the name of the book that you read on inner healing? Just curious (to see if I might perhaps already have it on my shelf). Thank you.

  3. The name of the book was “Deliverance and Inner Healing” by John Sandford. I do not recommend this book to anyone and it’s a popular one with many churches and ministries. All of them need to be burned. (Maybe I’ll write about this someday…it was devastating to me.)

    • That’s one book I do not have on my shelf. Thank you for the input on the book–I just googled it, and the “official” web site is a bit on the kooky side . . .
